For the next several weeks the Image of the Day will look back over this first mars year. It will focus on four themes: 1) the poles - with the seasonal changes seen in the retreat and expansion of the caps; 2) craters - with a variety of morphologies relating to impact materials and later alteration, both infilling and exhumation; 3) channels - the clues to liquid surface flow; and 4) volcanic flow features. While some images have helped answer questions about the history of Mars, many have raised new questions that are still being investigated as Odyssey continues collecting data as it orbits Mars.<p />Infrared images taken during the daytime exhibit both the morphological and thermophysical properties of the surface of Mars. Morphologic details are visible due to the effect of sun-facing slopes receiving more energy than antisun-facing slopes. This creates a warm (bright) slope and cool (dark) slope appearance that mimics the light and shadows of a visible wavelength image. Thermophysical properties are seen in that dust heats up more quickly than rocks. Thus dusty areas are bright and rocky areas are dark.<p />This daytime IR image was collected on February 3, 2003 during the northern summer season. This image shows a younger channel cutting through an older crater.<p />Image information: IR instrument. The image is located at 10.1 degrees North and 342 degrees East. The site is located near the Aram Chaos Region. We were looking for rampart craters within the image and we compared the percentage of rampart craters in the site to the percentage of ramparts in other control sites to see if there is a relationship between gray hematite and rampart craters.</p><p>The Madison #1 MSIP Team (5th through 8th graders) from Phoenix, Arizona was led by a sixth grade science and math teacher.</p><p>Image information: VIS instrument. The image is 18km x 54km, Lat. 21.6N, Long. 137.21E, Sun Angle of 64.13 degrees, 6,746.4 seconds into orbit, and with a camera filter centered at about 650nm.</p><p>The Westview Astronomy Research Team is a group of 25 students from Westview High School who wrote a scientific proposal to NASA, JPL, and Arizona State University Mars Flight Research Facility. The proposal was accepted and we worked for several months researching the background of exploration for water and life on the planet Mars. The team conducted trial experiments involving rock propulsion and several activities identifying surface features on Mars. We worked with Mars scientists to target and upload an image from the 2001 Mars Odyssey Spacecraft. The image was successfully acquired and viewed for the first time ever by our team. <h1>PIA05800: MSIP: Multinational Research in Memnonia Fossae</h1><div class="PIA05800" lang="en" style="width:517px;text-align:left;margin:auto;background-color:#000;padding:10px;max-height:150px;overflow:auto;"><a href="/figures/PIA05800_fig1.jpg"> </a><br /><p>Released 21 April 2004</p><p>Our group is from Saratoga Springs, NY and is called the Saratoga Springs NASA Club. It contains approximately 30 students between 9th and 12th grade who have been participating since September of 2001. We also worked with a small group of students from Chekhov, Russia in order to do a joint MSIP project. Chekhov is the sister city of Saratoga Springs. Their group contains kids of the same age group as our NASA Club. Our group, along with a few students from the Chekhov branch, visited Arizona State University in November of 2003.</p><p>We targeted our image in the Memnonia Fossae Region because our thesis had to do with the relationship between craters with lobates and the depth of the craters as use for evidence of the presence of water in the past. Our Russian counter parts agreed with this idea because they wanted to look into the relationship between gully formation and whether or not it could hint at the presence of water on Mars.</p><p>The major feature of our image is a large crater that contains lobates situated on the mid-left hand side of the image. Other features present in the image include a graben running along the top section and a channel that runs parallel to it. We are still looking into the possibilities behind the structure of the crater and if it could have had something to do with the presence of water on the surface. It contains approximately 30 students between 9th and 12th grade who have been participating since September of 2001. We also worked with a small group of students from Chekhov, Russia in order to do a joint MSIP project. Chekhov is the sister city of Saratoga Springs. Their group contains kids of the same age group as our NASA Club. Our group, along with a few students from the Chekhov branch, visited Arizona State University in November of 2003.</p><p>The image we targeted is in the Southern Hemisphere and is at -67 degrees N.</p><p>We chose this area because of the presence of craters in the vicinity, which we hope will help with our thesis about the presence of craters that contain lobates as use for evidence that there might once have been water in this area.</p><p>This image is causing us considerable difficulty due to the presence of a structure that resembles a lake located in the center of the crater.</p><p>Image information: VIS instrument. The two most prominent features in this photo are the relatively large impact craters, one located towards the top of the image, and one located in the lower area. This image was chosen for this particular MSIP project because the area was in a rocky region that was in located within latitudes known to have gully formations in the walls of local craters. Therefore, the craters appeared to be likely candidates to try and determine if gully formation in crater walls are more likely to form on the pole or equator-facing wall of the crater.</p><p>Our team, from the Klein High School Astronomy Club, included four students--two sophomores, a junior, and a senior, plus our club astronomer/teacher, and our sponsor. As part of the astronomy club, the team is all volunteer, and is involved in other astronomical activities in the community. The Tiu Vallis site was selected by the "Water" group. In the context image there appeared to be several features that would result in deposition. The first was a "bend in the river." There also was a structure that looked like a confluence of two streams that would result in deposition. The actual THEMIS image is dominated by a channel. There also is a confluence at the bottom of the image. The channel contains three lobate flow deposits. The Elysium Mons lava flow site was selected by the "Crater" group. The context image showed one large crater and what looked like many smaller craters. That would be an ideal site for the groups. The actual THEMIS image indeed contains one large crater with layered details in the walls, and many smaller craters. One team went on to attempt to find the relative age of the Elysium Mons lava flow by comparing its crater count to the crater count of a known age lava flow on our own Moon.</p><p>Image information: VIS instrument. During our trip to ASU, we took a picture of an area with many craters of different sizes and types (preserved, modified, and destroyed) to help us answer our question: Is there a difference between a crater formed by an impact on Mars and a force from beneath the planet's surface forming a mountain or volcano; and if so, what? Our image was taken at the latitude of 35.73 S and the longitude of 236.2 E, 695.6 seconds after the THEMIS passed the equator (while descending). To make a color image, three of the five filter images (each in grayscale) are selected. Each is contrast enhanced and then converted to a red, green, or blue intensity image. These three images are then combined to produce a full color, single image. Because the THEMIS color filters don't span the full range of colors seen by the human eye, a color THEMIS image does not represent true color. Also, because each single-filter image is contrast enhanced before inclusion in the three-color image, the apparent color variation of the scene is exaggerated. <h1>PIA05866: Dune-filled Crater in Color</h1><div class="PIA05866" lang="en" style="width:589px;text-align:left;margin:auto;background-color:#000;padding:10px;max-height:150px;overflow:auto;"><a href="/figures/PIA05866_fig1.jpg"> </a><br /><p>Released 4 May 2004</p>This daytime visible color image was collected on October 16, 2003 during the Southern Summer season of a crater within Molesworth Crater.</p><p>This daytime visible color image was collected on September 4, 2002 during the Northern Spring season in Vastitas Borealis. The THEMIS VIS camera is capable of capturing color images of the martian surface using its five different color filters. In this mode of operation, the spatial resolution and coverage of the image must be reduced to accommodate the additional data volume produced from the use of multiple filters. To make a color image, three of the five filter images (each in grayscale) are selected. Each is contrast enhanced and then converted to a red, green, or blue intensity image. These three images are then combined to produce a full color, single image. Because the THEMIS color filters don't span the full range of colors seen by the human eye, a color THEMIS image does not represent true color. Also, because each single-filter image is contrast enhanced before inclusion in the three-color image, the apparent color variation of the scene is exaggerated. Nevertheless, the color variation that does appear is representative of some change in color, however subtle, in the actual scene. Note that the long edges of THEMIS color images typically contain color artifacts that do not represent surface variation.</p><p>Image information: VIS instrument. An empirical correction has been performed to remove instrumental effects. A linear shift has been applied in the cross-track and down-track direction to approximate spacecraft and planetary motion. Fully calibrated and geometrically projected images will be released through the Planetary Data System in accordance with Project policies at a later time.</p><p>NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory manages the 2001 Mars Odyssey mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C. The Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) was developed by Arizona State University, Tempe, in collaboration with Raytheon Santa Barbara Remote Sensing. The THEMIS investigation is led by Dr. Philip Christensen at Arizona State University. Lockheed Martin Astronautics, Denver, is the prime contractor for the Odyssey project, and developed and built the orbiter.
